Roma fans have been condemned by England match officials after video showed Roma fans harassing Europa League final referee Anthony Taylor at Budapest airport following Wednesday’s defeat by Sevilla.
Video posted on social media on Thursday showed angry Roma supporters hurling insults and throwing chairs at Taylor as he and his family were taken away by airport security.
Taylor was heavily criticized and angrily heckled by the Italian club’s manager Jose Mourinho after Roma were beaten by Sevilla on penalties in Budapest.
Professional Game Match Officials Limited described the treatment of referees in the Premier League as “disgusting”.
“PGMOL is aware of videos circulating on social media showing Anthony Taylor and his family being harassed and abused at Budapest Airport,” they wrote in a statement.
“We are appalled by the injustice and heinous abuse that Anthony and his family suffered while attempting to return home from the Europa League final referee. We will continue to offer our full support to Anthony and his family.”
A Premier League spokesman said
“We are appalled and appalled by the unacceptable abuse that Anthony Taylor and his family suffered on their return from the Europa League final. No one should have to endure the inexcusable behavior they endured yesterday.”
“Anthony is one of our most experienced and accomplished match officials and we have our full support for him and his family.”
Before the incident at the airport
Footage showed Mourinho berating Taylor in the Puskas Arena car park, calling him a “fucking disgrace”.
The Portuguese coach lashed out at Taylor in his post-match press conference for not awarding Roma a second-half penalty for alleged handball, as well as a number of other decisions he felt were mishandled by the referees.
The two sides played fiercely in the final
Taylor showed a total of 14 yellow cards, setting a record for a single game in the Europa League.
“The referee seemed to be Spanish,” Mourinho said
“The result was unfair and there are many cases that need to be re-examined.”
As Mourinho also received a yellow card in the game
He may face a multi-match ban in future European competitions. UEFA is awaiting the match report from the referee before deciding whether to take any action against Mourinho.
Roma general manager Thiago Pinto continued his attacks on Taylor in a statement to Italy’s ANSA news agency on Thursday.
“We at AS Roma don’t want to leave any doubts about the merits of Sevilla. We think we played well in the final against our opponents and thank UEFA for giving us the stage,” Pinto said.
“We don’t usually immediately comment on situations like this
But throughout the day we analyzed the most obvious incidents and the ones that seemed less obvious, and it became clear that the match was not balanced from a disciplinary point of view. “.
